About our eggs and hens...

I have had the pleasure of being able to begin raising my own chickens, and have begun to start using their eggs in the cookies here at CookieTiam! It feels wonderful to be able to know more about where our food comes from, and know our chickens are getting the best care we can offer them. They have a coop and run, and get lots of free time in the gardens and orchard. We feed them Scratch and Peck, produce we grow and purchase (they have LOVED the melons we grew over summer), anything they forage around the gardens such as fallen apples and insects, and the occasional table scraps as treats to help close the loop on food waste.
Here is a little bit about each of our hens!
They each have very distinct personalities, and it has been so much fun getting to know each one of them!
Eglantine
Eglantine is an Easter Egger. She lays lovely matte blue eggs. Eglantine is the eldest, and is very gentle and sweet. She loves to hop up on my shoulder and groom me!
Indigo
Indigo is a Mystic Onyx. Indigo lays tan eggs. Indigo acts as the big sister of the group, and is our rooster, Acorn’s, best friend. They always snuggle together on the lower perch while the others roost higher up. She is very curious and likes to peck at anything shiny, like the snaps on my braces.
Juniper
Juniper is a Splash Maran and lays dark brown eggs. Juniper is a bit more nervous than the others, and is always the last one down from the roosting bars in the morning. She needs a bit of encouragement to come out of her shell, but luckily the flock is harmonious, so she doesn’t get pushed around despite her shyness.
Coriander
Coriander is an Olive Egger, though she ended up laying beige eggs with white speckles rather than olive colored eggs! Coriander is the resident escape artist, taking every opportunity to jump the fences and hang out around the front yard. She is also a bit spacey, so can sometimes get left behind. She likes to do her own thing.
Aubergine
Aubergine is a Lavender Orpington. She lays smooth, pinkish beige eggs. Aubergine is always the most enthusiastic about treats, and loves to grab her favorite snacks and do victory laps around the others with them, loudly proclaiming that she got the best piece.
